What is a tier list?

A tier list is a ranking chart made of rows. Each row is a tier, and everything you place in the same row is treated as equally good. It is a ranking scale from best to worst: the top row holds your best picks and the bottom row holds your worst. Instead of forcing yourself to put fifty things in an exact order from 1 to 50, you sort them into a handful of groups, which is much faster and much easier to argue about.

The format started in Japanese fighting game communities, where players ranked characters by how strong they were. It spread to anime, football, music, food, dog breeds and pretty much everything else, which is why a tier list works for anything and everything. Today most people use the letters S, A, B, C, D and F, and the colours run from red at the top to blue at the bottom.

S tier confuses a lot of people because the alphabet says A should be first. S is borrowed from Japanese school and game grading, where it stands for special or superior and sits above A. If something is in S tier, it is not just good, it is in a class of its own. what does S tier mean.

Can I use my own images?

Are my pictures uploaded anywhere?
No. The maker runs entirely inside your browser. Your files are read on your device and never sent to us, which is also why it keeps working when your connection drops.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Dragging works with touch, and if that feels fiddly you can tap an item once and then tap the row you want it in. The layout adjusts to small screens.
How do I save my tier list?
Press Save image. Your tier list is drawn to a high-resolution PNG and downloaded straight away, which is far cleaner than a screenshot and sharp enough to post or embed anywhere.
What does S tier mean?
S tier sits above A tier. The letter comes from Japanese grading, where S stands for special or superior. It is used for things that are clearly better than everything else on the list.
Can I add more than five tiers?
Yes. Press Add tier for a new row, then use the small controls beside each row to reorder it, rename any tier, change their colors or delete it. You can add or remove as many tiers as you like.
Can I share a link instead of an image?
Yes. The Share button copies a link that carries your list inside it. Anyone who opens it sees your ranking and can start editing their own copy right away.
