Tier list ideas
Ideas · 6 min read
The best tier list ideas are narrow enough to be arguable: not best films, but best horror films of the 2010s. Popular topics include anime series, football clubs, Pokemon starters, fast food chains, K-pop groups and days of the week.
A tier list is only fun if people disagree with it. That means the topic has to be specific enough that reasonable people land in different places. Best music is not a topic. Best decade for pop music is.
Anime and manga
- Shonen protagonists, ranked by how much you would want them on your side
- Anime openings you never skip
- Studios, by how consistent their output is
- Power systems, judged only on how well the rules hold up
- Series you finished versus series you dropped
The ready made sets are in anime templates.
Games
- Every console you have owned
- Game genres, by how often you actually finish one
- Boss fights, ranked by how good they felt rather than how hard they were
- Franchises that should have stopped three games ago
- Minecraft mobs, purely on vibes
Sets for these are in video game templates and Pokemon templates.
Sport
- Premier League clubs by how much you enjoy watching them, not by table position
- Football positions, ranked by how much you would want to play there
- NFL teams by uniform rather than record
- Sports that are better in person than on television
- National teams by how entertaining they are at a World Cup
Music
- Genres by how well they age
- Decades of pop music
- Instruments you wish you had learned
- K-pop generations
- Rappers, with the rule that you must justify anything in S tier
Food and everyday life
These are the easiest lists to start and the hardest to agree on, which is exactly why they travel so well.
- Fast food chains near you
- Fruits, with no mercy
- Days of the week
- Household chores by how much you avoid them
- School subjects, judged from adulthood
- Colours, which somehow always causes an argument
- Pets, by how much work they are worth
Turning an idea into a chart
Pick one, open the template library, and if the set exists it loads straight into the maker. If it does not, add your items as text in a few seconds. The step by step is in how to make a tier list.
